Indian Government Programs Cut LED Bulb Prices by 75%

India’s LED bulb retrofit incentives under the DELP program implemented by Energy of Efficiency Services (EESL), a joint venture of Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) of the Power Minister have slashed LED bulb prices significantly, reported the Economic Times.

The EESL has marked down LED bulb prices by 75% from INR 300 (US $4.58) in February 2014 to INR 73 in June 2015.

The aim of the program is to swap 770 million incandescent bulbs sold in India with LEDs, to reduce the country’s electricity load by 20,000 MW. Nationwide lighting upgrade to LEDs is estimated to cut energy consumption by 100 billion KWh and greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 80 million tonnes per year.

The EESL has also initiated a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) employee program under the Domestic Efficient Lighting Program (DELP).

Distribution centers were established throughout DMRC colonies and depots. More than 8,000 DMRC employees are expected to benefit from the scheme.
